Independent Living Skills Trainer (ILST) PDF Print E-mail

Under the guidelines of the NYS Medicaid TBI Waiver Program, the Independent Living Skills Trainer performs services designed to improve the abilities of individuals affected by traumatic brain injury (TBI) and to assist them in living as independently as possible within the community. Services may include assessment, training, supervision of, or assistance to, an individual with self-care, medication management, task completion, communication skills, interpersonal skills, socialization, sensory/motor skills, mobility, community transportation skills, reduction/elimination of maladaptive behaviors, problem-solving skills, money management, and ability to maintain a household.

Minimum Qualifications:
Prefer one of the following:

  • Registered Occupational Therapist, Registered Physical Therapist, Speech-Language Pathologist, Registered Professional Nurse, Certified Special Education Teacher, Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, Master of Social Work, or Master of Psychology, with at least one (1) year of experience completing functionally based assessments, developing a comprehensive treatment plan and teaching individuals with disabilities to be more functionally independent.
  • Individuals with an equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience, such as a Bachelor’s degree and at least two (2) years of direct experience, may be considered.
